Copyright laws are different for each country. In the U.S., the four basic constants about copyright protection are:

  All works published before 1923 are in the public domain.

  All works published after March, 1989, do not need a copyright notice applied - copyright protection is now automatic

 All works produced and published by the Federal Government are Public Domain, and can be used as source material or provided "as is".

  You cannot copyright ideas. The product has to be palpable and physical.

Between 1923 and 1989, however, there are multiple crucial exceptions you will need to know about, in order to protect yourself and your newly created product if you have chosen to use a Public Domain work as your source material.
